Certificate scheme for kids & teenagers
We have developed our own innovative certificate scheme which is supported by a world first in computer systems.

A well designed certificate scheme is an essential feature in a kids program. The scheme must provide a series of easily achievable certificate levels, structured so that young sailors can see an easy progression from one level to the next. In this way the sailing instructors can lead students all the way from beginners through to racing certificates without any step being too difficult for a young sailor.
Proud students in front of their rigged boat Other major certificate schemes for dinghy sailing have only two or three basic levels, which means students often have to master a lot of skills to progress from one level to the next, or may be awarded the next level certificate without properly mastering the skills required.
Our scheme has been broken down to seven levels. In the early stages the certificates are closely spaced so that most students will easily progress to a new level each time they attend a new activity, and in many cases will advance through more than one level. As they progress to more advanced levels, the students are presented with a higher degree of difficulty and must work progressively harder to pass each level. This progression provides encouragement to new sailors as well as a challenge to more advanced sailors.

At the end of each course we issue our students with a sailing skills certificate listing all levels that they have achieved since entering our program. As they attend more activities, they see this list grow from just one or two lines to a full page, and this growing list provides a real sense of pride and achievement. For advanced students we also often issue a current skills report that shows how they are progressing towards their next certificate level. Rope work At the end of the day, our certificate scheme is all about teaching kids to sail in a fun and safe environment. There are some things that will never change; kids will always come along expecting to have fun, they will usually be nervous on their first lesson, they will always get wet, we will often have to work around the prevailing weather conditions, and there will always be some students who pick up sailing more easily than others.
